Lead R&D Engineer
Summary
YASA is looking for a Lead R&D Engineer to join and lead a small, dynamic team of R&D engineers within our Innovation team. Reporting to the CTO, you will be undertaking simulation and advanced engineering tasks on various projects for our hybrid and electric systems for the automotive industry. The role will have a dynamic workload and will suit an individual who has a keen interest in technology and is willing to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Internal toolchain software development and maintenance, including YASA internal toolchains integrating COTS and in-house code for magnetic, thermal, and performance analysis and simulation and rig control and data acquisition software.
- Data analysis of motor performance from internal and external data sources in development and production.
- NVH testing and development of reduction, mitigation, and avoidance strategies.
- Leading a range of motor performance R&D activities, most of which would be simulation and software-based
- Providing leadership for the software toolchain development, particularly in the area of optimisation of complex systems with multiple variables.
- Managing team workload and stakeholders to ensure efficient working and impactful delivery.
- Working closely with the simulation team to develop and maintain YASA’s design processes.
- Find areas for improving the underlying simulation architecture, to enable greater flexibility and speed within the simulation environment.
- Use of best practice to create clear, well-documented code.
- Involvement in R&D projects, creating bespoke software from simple lab kit to more complex test systems.
To succeed in this role, we believe you'll need:
- A strong understanding of electric motor design and performance characteristics including efficiency.
- Experience with Python, MATLAB and LabVIEW
- Experience managing a cross-functional team of engineers.
- Experience with database systems.
- Experience with software engineering tools such as Git and Docker.
- Experience developing toolchains, coupling together a range of elements such as databases, FEA solvers, and optimisation programmes.
- To be a highly motivated individual with the ability to infuse change and energy at all levels within the business.
- To be a strong leader with the ability to train and grow a small team.
- Strong problem-solving and self-learning capabilities.
- Good initiative, with the ability to manage own time and priorities.
- A flexibility in their approach to work, with a desire to thrive in a dynamic and fast-moving environment.
- Strong communication skills (both written and verbal), good collaboration skills, and the ability to work effectively across teams within the organization.
Though not expected, it would be very beneficial if you have:
- Experience working with NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness).
Our mission is to lead the design and delivery of the best electric motor technology available. We believe that diversity of thought, and experience is a key driver of innovation. Research shows that while men apply to jobs if they meet ~60% of criteria, women and those in traditionally underrepresented groups tend to only apply if they check all boxes. So if you think you have what it takes but don’t meet every single point, please still get in touch. We’d love to have an initial chat and see if you could add value.
Benefits
- Discretionary bonus
- 28 days’ holiday
- Pension scheme
- Private medical plan with Bupa
- 4 x death in service
- Company car scheme
